Girls' Talk over High Tea at Ritz

イギリスの植民地だったシンガポールでは、あちこちのホテルやカフェでもハイティーがある。
ハイティーとは、厳密にはアフタヌーンティーよりも遅い時間にとる食事を指すようだけど、あまりうるさく言うこともない、昼過ぎにスコーンやらサンドイッチをいただくのも、だいたいハイティーと呼ばれているみたい。
Raffles Hotel のTiffin Room、Capella Hotel のThe Knolls に行ったことがあるので、今回は Ritz に行って見ることにした。

Here in Singapore which used to be a British colony, high tea is on the menu of many hotels and restaurants.
Technically speaking, high tea is a meal served in the later hours than afternoon tea. But there's no need to be meticulous, having scones or sandwiches in the early afternoon is also called high tea here, it seems. As I've been to the Tiffin Room at the Raffles Hotel and The Knolls at the Capella Hotel, we tried out the Ritz Hotel this time.

まずは、パッションフルーツのmocktail（アルコール無しのカクテル）と、

XO醤サンバルソースでいただく海老煎餅から。（ああ、シンガポール！）

The course begins with a glass of mocktail of passion fruit
and shrimp crackers with XO-sambal sauce. (This IS Singapore!)

その次は、サーモンのパイ包み。

かなり食事感が強い。タルタルソースが絶品。

The second is a salmon pie with exquisite tartar sauce.
This is more like a meal than a snack.

紅茶、緑茶、フレーバーティー、コーヒーなどの中から、バラのお茶を選択。

I chose rose petal tea among a variety of drinks
including black teas, green teas, flavoured teas and coffees.

ハイティーといえば、これでしょう。サンドイッチにスコーン、プチケーキ。

Speaking of high tea, this is a must; towering plates of sandwiches, scones and petit cakes.

こっちに来てから初めておいしいと思ったホイップクリームにベリー。

マンゴーのソルベ。抹茶ゼリーとナタデココが隠れてた。器がコーンの形でかわいい。

冷房が効きすぎて寒かったけど、ちゃんとパシュミナのストールを持ってきてくれるところが Ritz らしい。

女同士でGirls' Talk、約4時間止まらずに喋り続けたけど、まだ足りない感じ。

美味しゅうございました。

Inside the hotel was absolutely freezing with the conditioner. But the Ritz is the Ritz; they brought us pashmina shawls. Although we were chitchatting constantly for about four hours, it was not enough.

I really enjoyed the lovely dishes.

Old Ford Factory

今日は、Upper Bukit Timah Road にある「旧フォード工場」に行ってきた。
ここは第二次世界大戦中にシンガポールに進軍した日本軍に英国軍が降服した場所で、当時の経緯や日本占領下のシンガポールについての博物館。
日本軍がシンガポールにやってきて人々の心に大きな傷を作ってしまったことは隠し様の無い事実で、日本人としてそれを目の当りにするのはとても辛いことでもある。そんな過去なんか見たくない、と関心のない振りをすることだってできる。数年前、ある縁がきっかけで日本で平和のために活動している人達と出会った。本当の平和とは何だろうという思いをめぐらすようになった私は、事実を知らなければ何も始まらないし、世界に向けて発言することもできないと考えるようになった。それでもやっぱり重かった私の腰を上げさせたのは、同じ思いを密かに持っていた日本人の友達。

郊外の博物館まで彼女と2人、バスに揺られて約20分。到着した時、何か行事でもあったのか、物々しい軍服姿の人たちがちょうど出て行くところだった。緊張感が走った。
日本人の私達を見てどう思うだろうとドキドキしながら入り口の扉を開けると、そこに居たのはにこにこ微笑む中国系シンガポーリアンのおじさん。「どうぞ観てってくださいー」少し緊張が解ける。
中に入ると、日本軍が当時使用していた銃やランプ、自転車や日章旗、近年の日本の歴史教科書、占領下の写真やスケッチとともに、原爆投下後の日本軍の降服、731部隊、軍事裁判にいたるまでの事実がパネルとして展示してある。そこに私が見たのは、少し距離感のある視点からただ事実を伝ようとする姿勢で、もちろん戦争の狂気は感じられるものの日本に対する怒りなどは感じられなかった。展示の最後が「Taking History As A Lesson (歴史から学ぼう)」だったのは、本当に救われる思いだった。

展示室から出てきた私達を迎えてくれたのは、またまたにこやかなおじさん達。「あんたたち日本人かい？日本人にしちゃ背が高いねえ！映写室でフィルムも観るかい？」と、私達2人だけのために上映してくれた。

そのフィルムは、日本の占領時代をまとめたもので、実際の映像や体験した年配の方たちのインタビューだった。切り落とした首を持って笑う軍人の狂気じみた写真などかなりショッキングなものもあったが、一番胸に残ったのは、体験者の「原爆がなければ日本は止まらなかった」という発言だった。原爆が正当であるとは誰も心の底では思っていないと信じたいが、こんな発言をさせるほど当時の日本軍は狂気に満ちていたんだろうと想像はつく。そう、コッポラの「地獄の黙示録」で表現されたようなあの狂気。

さて、フィルムを観終わってタクシーを待っている間も、受付のおじさん達は私達の心の内を見通しているかのように終始にこやかで親切だった。こんな風に世界中が「戦争を憎んで人を憎まない」でいられたら、本当の平和になれるのかもしれないと思った。

Chinese New Year Eve Eve

2月3日、日本で言うところの節分が中国でのお正月。
ちょっと前の日本のお正月みたいにほとんどのお店が閉まってしまう。
みんな、親戚一同が集まってお祝いするため、鮑やなんかのご馳走を買いこむ。
パイナップルタルトとかエッグロールとかお菓子も一杯買い込む。
新年に、服や家財道具を新調すると縁起がいいということもあって
みんな町へ出て買い物をしまくるのがこの時期だ。


雰囲気を見てみようとChinaTownまで行ってみたら
それはすごい人出で、出店もいっぱい出ていて活気があって面白かった。

前々夜の今日から、マリーナで花火の打ち上げも始まった。
さあ、お正月。

February 3rd is Chinese New Year, as well as Setsubun in Japan.
Most shops will be closed as the New Year's Day in Japan a few years ago.
People buy in delicacies like expensive abalones to get together with all relatives for the celebration.
They stock up many snacks like pineapple tarts and egg roles.
This time of the year, everyone goes out to the town and enjoy their shopping spree, because they believe that new things like clothes and household items will bring a luck.
We went to feel the atmosphere in Chinatown where I really enjoyed with a huge crowd and so many stalls.
The fireworks began at the marina today. Now we're ready for New Year!

Thaipusam

今日は Thaipusam　の日。タミル暦で「タイ」と呼ばれる月の満月の日に行われる、ヒンズー教のスブラマニヤ神に感謝するお祭り。
先日から何人か誘ってみたけれど、みんな口をそろえて「そんな痛そうなものは見たくない」と断られてしまったので、カメラを片手にリトル・インディア仕様の格好で（短パン、Tシャツにビーサン＆手ぶら）出かけてきた。

神様に忠誠を誓うために、信者の人たちがカバディという御輿を運ぶところがこのお祭りのハイライト。カバディは、クジャクの羽やヒンドゥーの神々の像を飾りつけたもので、日本のお御輿とは全く違う。それを体に食い込ませた鉤で固定したまま、4.5キロの道のりを歩く。両肩と頭の上に載せた人、背中に引っ掛けた鉤で山車のようなものを引っ張る人、頬にだけ鉄串を刺した人、供物を運ぶ人、周りで声をかけたりしてサポートする人達が次々と寺院から寺院へと歩く。もちろん、みんな裸足だ。

「血が出たりするらしい」とか「死ぬ人もいるらしい」と聞いていたけれど、血をだらだら流しながら歩いている人はいなかったし、本人はすごく痛そうだったが、多分家族の方々だと思うんだけれど一緒に歩いている女の人達はなんとなく楽しげでもあり、携帯電話でおしゃべりしながら歩いている人もいた。まあ、子供の時から毎年見ていたら、そんなに大した事でもないのかもしれない。

この行列、次から次と出てくるわけではなく、かなり間隔をあけて寺院から出てくる。ここのところずっと涼しかったのに、今日はとてもいい天気で日差しも強かった。そんな炎天下で２時間くらい、ずっと見物していたものだから、私はすっかりへとへとになってしまった。串刺しになったまま裸足で歩き続ける人もいるっていうのに。

それにしても、この人達は何でまたこんな事をしなくてはいけないのだろう、と不思議に思った。「俺はこんなこともできるんだぞ」という自己表現にはなるかもしれないけど。神に言われて、息子のイサクを生贄にしようとしたアブラハムみたいなもんだろうか。いったい、それに見合う見返りがあるんだろうか、いや見返りなんて求めてはいけないのかもしれない。ともかく、滝にうたれるのもできない私には全く別世界の話だ。
そういえば、串刺しを手伝うボランティアがあるらしい、興味のある方はぜひ来年お試しください。

Today is the day of Thaipusam, which is a Hindu festival for Hindu deity Subramaniam held on the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai. As I had been turned down by everyone I'd asked to go together, saying "I don't wanna see such a painful thing", I went to see the festival alone in Little India style (shorts, T-shirt and flip flop, with only a camera in hand).

The highlight of the festival is procession of devotees carrying kavadis to display their loyalties to the gods. Kavadis are cage-like structures ornamented with peacock feathers or Hindu gods. The devotees carry them by spiking through their bodies and walk 4.5km through the city from a temple to another temple. I saw one carrying kavadis on his shoulders and head, and another towing a float-like thing hooked to his back. The other was with skewers stuck through his cheeks. Some carried offerings, and others supported the devotees encouraging them. They were, naturally, all shoeless.

Although some of my friends said "they bleed" or "some had died by doing it" from what they've heard, nobody shed their blood, fortunately. And women walking with them (I guess they're family of the devotees) seemed to be somewhat enjoyed, some of the women were even talking on the cellphone while the bearers looked so painful. Well, that might not be such a big deal for them, having seen it since their childhood.

This procession came out from the temple at intervals, not continuously. It has been cool recently, but it was very hot today with blaze of the sun. I had looked on it under such the flaming sun for around two hours, I got totally exhausted. On the other hand they were walking on barefoot being spiked!

I wonder why on earth they have to do this. It might be a kind of self-expression like "I am capable of doing this". Or is it like Abraham tried to offer his son Isaac to God? Do they get enough return from this? No, it might not be appropriate to expect any return. At any rate, this is totally another-world story for me who cannot even perform cold water ablutions by a fall (as some Japanese do in Shinto practice). I've read that they look for volunteers to help spiking. If you are interested in, please try it out next year.

Rainforest

今日は、前から行ってみようと思いながら、自宅からのアクセスが不便なのでなかなか行かなかった Botanic Garden　に、行って来た。

Botanic Garden では、他の美術館や博物館のように
月に２回、ボランティアでガイドが行われていて、今日はその日だった。
あいにく午前中は予定があって、途中から参加したものの、充分楽しめた。

こっちに来た頃は、その力強さや大きさに圧倒されていたけれど、
毎日、目にしていると、当たり前のように感じてきた熱帯の植物。
改めてゆっくり見てみると、やっぱりすごいと思った。
とても都会で、普通に生活しているけれど、元はこんな原生林だったんだなぁと。
散策している間、何度もリスに出会った。トカゲや蛇も（もちろん）いるとのことだ。

今日は行けなかった Orchid Garden には、約６万株の蘭があるらしい。
ぜひ次回は行ってみたい。

さて、連日の雨の中、なんとかもっていた空も、午後にはまた激しい雨が降り出した。

Today, I went to the Botanic Garden where I'd always wanted to go but I haven't because of the inconvenient access from my condo. They have a volunteer guide tour twice a month like as other museums, and today is that day. I was busy in the morning unfortunately and joined them at the middle of the tour. But I was enjoyed it very much.
Although I was overwhelmed by vigor and greatness of tropic plants when I first came here, seeing them everyday has made me feel nothing specoal. But I thought they are so awesome when I take a view of them one more time. We are living in this metropolis as if it is natural, but it was originally such a wild rainforest. During the stroll, we encountered squirrels several times. Lizards and snakes are also there, no surprises, our guide said.
I heard that there are around 60 thousands orchids in the Orchid Garden that I couldn't take time for this time. I do want to go see there next time.
After few days of raining, the sky had maintained to keep the moisture up there in the morning. In the afternoon it started to rain heavily again just like tropical zone, exactly.

POMPEII

２日の日曜日、この気候ではお正月気分にもなれなくて、初詣に行く神社もないし、お寺というのもなんだかなぁと思っていた。
そんな時間を持て余しているところに、今月23日まで、国立博物館でポンペイ展が開催中。
イタリア好きで遺跡好きの私、現地に２度行ったことがあるにも関わらずまた観にいった。

と、なんとラッキーなことに、この日は全館無料の日だった！
普段の入場料が12ドルだから、ちょうど昼食代が浮いた感じ。

出土品やレプリカが主な展示だったけれど、フレスコ画やモザイクの泉はなかなか見応えがあった。3DのCG上映もまあまあ面白かった。先日、日本で塩野七生さんの「ローマ人の物語　38-40」を入手して読み始めたところなので、当時のコインなんかを見るとかなり感慨深いものがあった。まあ、どちらにしても無料だったので満足するに決まってるんだけど。ああ、またイタリアに行きたくなってきた！

Last Sunday, I wasn't in the mood to celebrate New Year because of this hot weather, while I wondered if visiting a temple was little different since there's no Shinto shrine to visit according to Japanese tradition. I didn't know what to do with such a time, but I noticed that Pompeii exhibition has been held at the National Museum till 23rd of this month. I love Italy and archaeological sites; I decided to go see the exhibition although I'd been the actual place already twice.

Then luckily, that day was a museum open house day!
The admission is SD12 on a normal day and we could just saved money for lunch.

The exhibition consists of artifacts and their replicas, and I think that the frescoes and the mosaic fountain are worth seeing. The screening of a 3D film is interesting too. I was impressed deeply by the ancient coins, because I began to read Vol. 38-40 of Roma-jin no Monogatari (Stories of the Romans) by Nanami Shiono which I got the other day back in Japan. Well, in any case, I was supposed to be satisfied thanks to free admission... Oh, again, I wanna go to Italia!

とうとう2011年になってしまいました。
私がこちらに来てから7ヶ月、主人が来てから11ヶ月。あっという間です。

Already 7 months have past since I came here, and 11 months for my husband. Time really flies so fast.
